Yaoi vs Shounen-Ai

Alright, so I consider yaoi and shounen-ai to be two completely different genres of anime. I enjoy yaoi because to me it seems to have more depth and mature themes to it (as long as it isn't a one-shot). Shounen-Ai, to me, comes off as rather light-hearted.Is there anyone who agrees or disagrees? Which one does everyone else like more? Do you find this valuable?

I'm no expert, but as far as I know, many people consider shounen-ai to be one of categories that the yaoi genre is divided into. Animes labeled as shounen-ai are more about feelings and romance and yaoi is the deeper, more explicit and more sexual view of the relationship bettween the characters.I like both. That would seem to imply that shounen-ai would actually be a separate sub-genre with yaoi specifically being sexually explicit boys-love and shounen-ai being non-explicit (or at least less explicit) bl with more emphasis on romantic love. As someone else pointed out in their profile (I think it was piratemonkeyofdeath) I see at least some elements of yaoi/shounen-ai in very many of the anime I have seen. Some of it may have been unintentional, or maybe it's just that I am seeing more in it than is actually there. But even in something as innocuous as InyuYasha there have been elements of shounen-ai. By the way, does anybody else consider hero worship to be kind of a form of romantic love or shounen-ai? As far as preferences go, I think I actually prefer the lighter-hearted shows that I'm assuming to be shounen-ai. As my moniker says, I'm just a sucker for a good romance. Yeah, I know, that is soooo cheesy, but this is the anonymous internet so I can be a little cheesy if I wanna be :p (Though Sensitive Pornograph was definitely hot!) Do you find this valuable? |
